A podcast by MAKENA. Siena and Toast, two Hawaii girls, talk about being gay, Asian-American, mostly-vegan, lessons learned as performing and recording singer-songwriters, and their relationship. Plus, listener contests, laughing, inspiration, and encouragement.

A very casual, loose, impromptu-feeling episode today.

Here's a link to Siena's birthday party program.

Thanks for listening!

Actually, I had imagined that your party would be more like this... :o)

i'm hoping the above photo means there was also some video taken? KTSP & Fishergirl this is a shout out for more of the inside scoop!...was there any dancing? any iced tea bongs?...noted dignitaries like David of the PRNC trying to work their TEK powers? : )

    A-lo,

Yes, it was an awesome line-up, and the girls organized a beautiful celebration! It was an honor to be invited and to be a part of it! We wish you were there too! It was just good fun and good times shared in an intimate restaurant filled with good vibes from all of Siena & Toast's friends!

The performers gave it their all, and all of them had beautiful things to say about Siena! Although I did not record any of the performances with my digital camera, the entire night was video recorded by the girls. There were sweet ukulele instrumentals, a cute song about a robin, cool covers of Stevie Nicks & Melissa Ethridge songs, a beautiful & inspiring song by Faith Rivera "Power of Now", touching songs by Christopher Kai with his inspirational keyboard playing (I hope to be able to play like that one day!), two beautiful hula dancers, and the surprise of the night -- a fun cover of "Good Enough" by the guys of the group Pumana!

A-lo, I'm looking forward to being there with you during your first live MAKENA experience @ Four Olives when you visit in June! :)

Toast - you shouldn't be making a face on Siena's birthday - tsk tsk :)

Don't sweat the un-PC comedy - your listeners are mature enough to know that it was not meant as an endorsement of all those opinions.

    aloha and happy monday everyone!

s&t: again, hauoli la hanau to siena! your chrono age will never match your 'sense' and 'wisdom' age. methinks that has come from many lifetimes, especially your 'sense'. and mahalo for naming me 'listener of last month (april)'! i appreciate it! "cute voice"?? eh? i'm blushing again. also thanks for giving etolix entries into the contest. the pressure's off of her for now. maybe she'll feel more at ease wit da pidgin after she does her family reunion thing in hawaii come july. then she'll post video of her interactions wit da locals trying fo' buy local kine grindz! heh heh oh! it's been ages since i've listend to rap's poi dog w/crabs! boy did that bring back memories and i LMAO! "... mix it up wit her younga sistah ... avoid her muddah in da supamahket..." hahahaha!!! siena, your bday bash sounded awesome and toast, nice job on the program! it was aesthetically happy-looking and it was just so cool for you to write about the guests' relationship to you folks. i guess that's one benefit of being in the music business -- you can invite your friends and have a bday concert cuz they all perform. that must've been one heck of a 'happy birthday song' performance! loved the cake & pie descriptions (i know dobash as choco cake w/pudding for frosting) and the description of the handmade box! it's funny but it seems to end up always being about the food! YES!

a-lo: watched your other vid of pidgin attempts again and your mitty is just too funny! she steals the spotlight.

anyhows, it's been a golf weekend for me. starting friday i watched the 2nd round of the lpga michelob ultra open at kingsmill in virginia. michelle wie (hawaii girl) didn't make the cut so she didn't play on the weekend. but my two girls, annika and lorena, did and were leading the pack! i played golf locally on saturday so taped the round then spent the better part of sunday watching the last 2 days of the tournament on tape. the wheels came off of lorena's cart and she fell out of contention and ended up in a tie for 12th place, but my no. 1 girl annika won the tournament by 7 strokes over the field. this is her 72nd win of her career but the first time that she's ever won this event, known in the players' circle as the '5th major'.

ReCAPTCHA: Aurelio repeated (no, that's "a-lo repeated")

p.s. note on tita: the short form, tita, like what siena is familiar with is the townie pidgin form. "teetah" is more of a boonies pidgin form. on oahu, i hear "teetah" from da guys who come from waianae side and wailua side. heavy pidgin. just my 2 cents ... it's what i experienced.

    wohoo,

my copy of the LN magazine with S & T on the cover arrived today. it was NOT in a brown bag but rather the equally discrete manilla envelop. Thankfully my roommate (mitty) kept her paws off it...

so cool to see the "live" glossy of S & T on the cover. definitely pin-up material. mitty wants it to go up over her litter box...we compromised and now she's sitting on it (no Monkey Butt!).

i've read the article and Siena i do not think you sound new to the mainland (F.O.B.). to haole ears it just sounds like you both know a lot about Hawaii. I think anyone can read the article by going to the LN website (check past comments for link). It's really a great interview. Thanks for being so open in your answers. i think your honesty really helps a lot of people (self included : ).

Also, given that the current contest is taking multiple entries i do not want to assume there can also be multiple prize winners. i would like to donate my entries to the esteemed LPGA (Ladies Pidgin Group Ace) member-Mel : ).

    Hey A-Lo,

I think Ken pretty much covered it all! There is a video...

The party was pretty tame. No iced tea bongs. The entertainment was great! There were two hula dancers, but nobody else danced. Siena didn't shimmy or shake the sequins on her top, but she looked great! Toast fulfilled all of the duties of a good girlfriend, and made sure everything went smoothly...The cake was onolicious!! Yes, I ate two pieces, but they were small--I swear! *oink, oink*

I'm sure you'll enjoy finally seeing/hearing Makena *live* when you're here. Maybe the music, the weather, and the California girls will make you want to relocate! :)

Karen did make my 50th pretty darn special!!! No live music, but all Hawaiian from the DJ! My personal selections. My brother set up a "chocolate fountain", everyone wore Hawaiian apparel. It was really nice.
Karen’s 50th is still two years away. She wants to cruise the Rhine, or do a French wine tour. I better start playing the lottery. . .
We are celebrating Elizabeth’s 3rd birthday tonight. Now I bet that’ll be a happenin’ party. Maybe I’ll bring my guitar. Yeah, that’ll piss her father off. And, my ex-husband.

myra: thanks so much for putting names to the people who are going on the chart etolix is going to put together! (etolix -- less research now! big help, eh?) i thot your name was myra or myrna, lidat, but what i do remember is that you use pecans in/on your banana bread, not walnuts, cuz walnuts have that slightly bitter taste. same here ... if i don't use mac nuts, which is always my 1st choice, i use pecans. i don't dust the top of the banana bread w/nuts tho it looks more ono that way!

ken: did siena even know it was strawberry? from her description, sounded like she inhaled it. fwoop! gone! so i'll take your word that it's ono enough to be your favorite.

a-lo: i'm okay ... thanks for your concern. her announcement shocked the chit outta me. i'll enjoy watching her for the rest of the 2008 season tho. she's had a terrific career in competitive golf and i've always enjoyed watching her play. i'm glad i got to see her play once in person, earlier this year at the Fields Open at Ko'Olina.

while that shocked me off balance, this knocked me off my feet: justine henin, world #1 in tennis and another favorite athlete of mine announced today that she is burnt out and retiring, effective today! wtf? what's going on here? anyway, justine is my favorite tennis player even from when she wasn't #1 in the world. she's small compared to the field and she plays a 1-handed backhand, a wicked one!! i'm sad to see her retire suddenly and right before the french open. *sigh*.

siena & toast too: anela's comment was the last on the last podcast, ep 60. i saw the count go up after you folks posted ep 61 so i checked and there was her comment! i'm poi dog: chinee/japanee/hawaiian/haole (english/irish) but appearance-wise i pull strong asian. my sistah look hawaiian/chinee and we no look like we came from same family even. that's hawaii genetics for you!

hey everybody! Hope ya'll are having a great week. So, I'm a little slow again this week, I just listened to the podcast. Sounds like good times were had by all at the birthday party for Siena...WOOT WOOT!

S&T:I was totally surprised to hear you guys read my sentence on the podcast. You had my 15 year old brother literally rolling on the floor lauging his ass off because he knows I soooo do not talk like that. Also, in case you're still curious...I was born and raised in Seattle but my family is from the friggin' boonies of kauai plus I have friends from eva beach, waipahu, haleiwa, etc. Not sure that qualifies me to do the pigin thing but I thought I'd give it a try.

    Day-um..I'm goooood! hehe...jus'kiddin'.

A side note about "birff-day"...my grandmother is japanese and she used to say "baif" (rhymes with waif)which I'm assuming means "to bathe". It used to crack me up when my haole friends would call when I'm in the shower and my grandma would tell them "she stay baif-ing..try call back lay-tas". My friends would be like "what were you doing? Baif-ing? HUH??!"

    Happy Belated Birthday Queen!

queen- a very happy and very belated birthday! sounds like you had a productive day in the yard, kind of like a grand Spring celebration. please post pictures.

mel-urrg. i wasn't expecting that one either. hate to see these young women retiring so early from basically burn out. Justine Henin is one of my favorite players too. i hope these sports really take a look at the schedules they're asking these players to keep. seems a symptom of an overplanned, overscheduled "doers" society. i wish they'd let them be athletes...not rock stars.

hmmm, a Sprinkles cupcake adventure...okay, i'm in! i think i'd like to see where exactly in their bodies all the food goes. i understand that S&T are very petite. i keep looking at the little convenience store height chart (the thing they have painted on by the door in case they get robbed) .every time i pass i think maaaan i'm going to be a giant. i'm 5' 9. they're what? 4' 10?

And yes! i am a cereal girl. if there's a baggy of Froot Loops, i'm a happy girl : ). i'm hoping etolix can give me a crash course on food appreciation when she's in town (next weekend yaaaay!)

However, I do see something getting on the ballot which temporarily overturns today's decision until it goes to the Federal Courts & Supreme Court.

The forums and comments sections of the local papers are full of: "It's a lifestyle choice!", "What, do I get to marry my dog now?", "Watch, roommates all over the state are going to apply for tax relief!", "You and your supporters are all going to Hell!", "You gays won't stop until you get one as President and make sodomy the national pasttime!", etc.

Frankly speaking, what a load of BULLSHIT...

Why do so many people feel so determined to ruin the lives of decent people who just want to be in love and have that recognized just like any other marriage?

I feel extremely behind on comments, so apologies if I've neglected to respond to your comment.

The Chart-- I will have to go back through all the comments one of these days and pull together everyone's information (after I get a huge map of the world!) and get this chart up and running!

Henin-- I was totally shocked to hear that she was retiring. I never really got into tennis, but while I lived in Taiwan, I watched much of Wimbledon with my uncle and cousin and she definitely caught my eye. It'll be interesting to see where life leads her, especially since she's still so young.

Nobby007, how old are you? I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and I've only heard of one gay bar there. I ended up in Columbus, OH for college and though I chose OSU for the scholarships they offered me and not so much for the diversity, it was one of the best moves of my life. Now, I'm here in DC where opportunities are plenty, plenty! In fact, I'm thinking about becoming a co-chair for the local Asian lesbian organization. It is definitely worth it to hit up some bigger cities, if only for a short visit. We GMG listeners are scattered throughout the country-- I'm sure most of us would be more than willing to tell you about the local scenes or even meet up with you!

Queen, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! With all the rain that's been happenin', it must've been nice to be out in the garden on your birthday!

Golden Delicious apples are my favorite. The best ones are the ones picked right off of the trees!

S+T, looking forward to those wedding invitations! :D

etolix & Queen - I am 29, Filipino (like Siena only without the other races...) Galena, IL is actually (if you are looking at the state on a map) at the very, VERY north western tip. 8mi. from the border of WI and 12mi. to the border of IA. I was in the "liberal" east coast where I had a wonderful career @ UPS in Jacksonville, FL before I moved up here (Don't ask why...I HATED, FL it has no seasons!) . Now, I work for John Deere....I know, I know...I am just one big freaking "stereotype," huh? Although, I am not butchy, or dykey or femme...I like to call it chapstick lesbian...HA, HA!!! Thanks, for the welcoming thoughts and friendship...much aloha!

S & T - since we are sort of on the subject of pidgin...why not talk about the slang words...like: (excuse the spelling)

    Hammajang - all messed up
Trychout - try and watch out, this one could be like Jeff Foxworthy's redneck words...

"fee fi fo fum..." this is "giant" a-lo here. i think i have an answer to the height problem... (no it's not really a "problem" just something fun to throw around). I figure at least part of the time i'm with S&T we will be rollin'. (That's haole hip speak for walking and looking cool). AND when there are distances to walk...i am in MY CHAIR (wheelchair)! i will then be 4'5 or something and THEY will be...well, they'll still be petite but mini-giants! oh the complexity...

hmm. trips to Indiana. LMIT i'd love to but uh, gonna have to wait til these gas prices go down. yikes! ouch! BOING! at the pump. Happy very belated birthday to Elizabeth. I hope her Uma and TuTu followed directions well and made strawberry bread and built forts with her. : ) See it's something about that strawberry. it knows no age Siena, Etolix (ice cream), Elizabeth...eternal bliss : ).

Nobby007- LMIT (Bonnie) and i live in the Midwest (Indiana and Ohio) and have been able to meet up for a Girl Meets Girl(s) Day. Maybe next time you would like to join us? In any regard, count me among those who would like to be your friend. I think Queen says it best fais doo doo- oops,no, that's not it- "here we are all friends!"

ooo, yes, and Froot Loops, Fruity Pebbles, Frost Flakes (Gold) yum. Etolix don't work too hard. : )

also, not sure why... but thought i'd share, this weekend i am traveling home in a belated Mother's Day celebration. it's my goal to capture on video my feline sister Sabrina. one of the world's fattest cats! she's won an award in an artshow for her girth. my mom and i are going to the award show tonight : ).

yep. this is how we roll in the Midwest : )

    take care all.

    Amanda,
I understand about the gas prices. I would come your way. . but. . I have a funeral tomorrow morning, I take my niece and her family to Midway Airport Saturday afternoon, and of course, busy, busy on Sunday.
Please, I can't drive for more than hour without needing a nap. That means it would take me 12 hours to get to Columbus instead of 6!!!
    Have a great weekend though!

    a-lo and LMIT,

I actually get around the south west Chicago suburb of Matteson and Frankfort...I would love to meet up sometime whenever for whatever...I suppose now is the time in my life that I should try to "grow up" and expand my herizons....thanks for the invite...we'll see what happens...

Oh, and LMIT...I definitely agree with you on the liberal northeast...when I was in high school and college I used to go to New York City every year and I love to travel...and although FL sucks....Jacksonville was still better with regards to meeting people than here...oh well, you guys will just have to fill the void....;)

    Nobby007,
That was Queen, I think, talking about the Northeast. I've lived here in NW Indiana my whole life. And, Frankfort or Matteson are only about an hour or less from Merrillville. And an easy shot, usually. Construction can suck!!
Chicago, I think, is a very gay friendly city. City employees have domestic partner insurance. Shoot, you ask someone in Indiana about Domestic Partner and they'll probably think it's a type of beer!!
